My girls love to dance. Whenever there’s a break in activity or extra time to waste, the iPad comes out and Spotfy opens up. There’s a lot of great catchy music available to them, and plenty of songs that inspire their dance moves, but the lyrics are not necessarily kid appropriate (e.g. Justin Bieber’s new song “Sorry” is actually really fun…but maybe not right for a 5 and 7 year old. Just maybe). There have been a few times when I’ve put a song on Spotify only to discover that the album version includes an expletive here and there. OOPS! And then there are the songs about relationships that lead to a bunch of questions from my eldest about who the singer is going out with and and why they are upset in the song. Thankfully we have alternative outlets like Radio Disney where I can find good music, by singer-songwriters who are better than some mainstream music, that the girls enjoy and can dance to. While not all the music on RD is totally appropriate for the girls, there are a few positive and inspiring girl anthems that I am happy to play loud and often. Below are 4 songs that will get your girls moving and that share a message that you can reinforce during dance breaks.
Little Mix “Salute”
Rachel Platten, “Stand by You”
Hailee Steinfeld, “Love Myself”
Bea Miller, “Dare You” – We had her whole Not an Apology album on replay all summer long. Some favorites include “Young Blood,” “Fire ‘n’ Gold,” and “Dracula.”
