When I told my little sister (the 3rd born) that I wasn’t having a 1st birthday party for MY 3rd born, she gave me this look of “yup, the 3rd born always gets the shaft.” I’m just not going to do it. There’s really no need. Here’s why (in my opinion): a) there’s just waaaay too much going on in both my family and my husband’s this time of year, b) she won’t know if she has a party or not, and c) between Christmas and New Year’s, we will have plenty of family time to celebrate without needing to gather everyone together again. I don’t mean to slight her 1st birthday by any means, but I’ve decided to be more practical and make things easier for everyone. When I mentioned this to other mom friends, a few told me that they didn’t have a 1st birthday party either. I know as she gets older, she’ll probably be a little bummed about having a birthday so close to the holidays. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, and plan an awesome party for her and her friends.
What I DO have planned for the 1st birthday, however, is this: a) a cupcake and singing on Christmas Eve with hubby’s family, b) a cupcake and singing on Christmas Day with my family, and c) a family celebration on her actual birthday. Shortly after I announced my plans, my 3rd born sister decided that she would plan a party for her 3rd born niece. All was right in the world again, and I’m actually really excited about it 🙂
For anyone who does plan a winter 1st birthday party (or any age really), you’ll always have factors like weather and holiday functions working against you. Though if you’re reading this in a part of the country that’s warm 24-7, then weather won’t be a problem. Whether or not your winter involves snow, it’s fun to use that as a backdrop for the 1st birthday. For starters, you can use the word play theme of Winter One-derland. Other dreamy, cozy ideas to consider are The Nutcracker and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Check out the inspiration below. Click the links in the title to see more. These parties are stunning!
{ Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in Pink & Gold via Hostess with the Mostess }
My step-sis is planning a 1st birthday in this theme for her baby girl who is just 2 weeks younger than mine.
{ Star-Shaped Sandwiches for Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Theme via PopSugar }
This requires so little but looks quite magical. Just be careful with toothpicks around babies!
{ Rustic Shabby Winter Wonderland via Kara’s Party Ideas }
Very soft and romantic. What I like about this is that you can reuse a lot of the decorations again.
{ Easy DIY Hot Chocolate Bar via Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom }
All parties need to have a drink bar of some kind. You can have a lot of fun with the candy and toppings to mix in. Throw in an adult bowl of liquor-filled chocolates for some added warmth 🙂
{ Winter ONEderland birthday outfit via CEBowtique on Etsy }
Ahhh so cute! That’s all I can say.
{ Wintery 1st Birthday Cake with Cake Pops via Style Me Pretty }
This is elegant without being too over-the-top. I love the soft colors and sparkly snowflakes.
{ Cream & Mint Green Winter One-derland Party via Chickabug }
Mint green gives off such a cool and crisp feeling. I like its use here as accents on the drinks, photo props and cupcakes.
{ Nutcracker Suite Ballet 1st Birthday via Kate Landers Events, LLC }
This party was inspired by the designer’s past as a ballet dancer and love for The Nutcracker Suite. The color palette was based on the costumes from the Boston Ballet’s performance, as well as the props, scenery and characters.
{ Winter in Paris via The Little Umbrella }
Oo la la! The designer used vintage finds and incorporated French themes with macaroons, paper dolls and Marie Antoinette-themed bookmarks
{ Frozen Birthday Poster via Onthegoprints on Etsy }
What’s a winter birthday theme without some Frozen? There’s plenty of party ideas out there, but this is the first Frozen birthday poster I’ve seen. WHen she’s old enough to watch and remember the movie, she’ll love this even more.
