I have fond memories of being a Girl Scout. The afternoon gatherings of making crafts and planning badge opportunities were some of my favorite memories spent with good friends. And then of course there was the annual cookie selling campaign — I can still picture myself sitting in my neighbor’s kitchen with the large grid order form, watching them eagerly assign numbers to the boxes that they wanted. Today, because of the reach we have with social media, the cookie selling process can turn into quite the booming business for a young girl, if the motivation is there. Just a few weeks ago, I put in an order for a few boxes with the daughter of my friend CC aka A Working Mom Today. She sent a very professional email to a group of us who expressed interest, and in it she included her sales goal along with images of the available cookies. There certainly was nothing stopping her from setting up a Facebook page or Twitter account to help push sales. A few weeks after that, CC posted pictures of her with some friends outside a busy bagel shopping selling the cookies in person. Smart thinking! Witnessing her motivation to meet her goals made me want to support her even more. And I would bet that this experience has given her confidence in school, extracurriculars, and among friends.
As a child, I never really saw these various activities for what the organization designed them to be: opportunities to promote leadership and community service and to build “girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.” However, I can honestly say that my years as a Girl Scout had a role in developing my entrepreneurial spirit and social awareness to give back. Since its founding in 1912, there are now 2.8 million Girl Scouts, and many who have gone on to achieve fame in entertainment, politics, broadcasting, and other public careers. In honor of February 6th as National Girl Scout Cookie Day, I thought I would share some inspirational quotes for young girls by some of those famous Girl Scouts in history.
