Do you ever look at an empty food container and wonder what craft you can do with it? I do it ALL THE TIME but usually end up recycling or throwing the container away. This time I took to my social networks to get ideas for an empty Keurig coffee box (below).

Keurig coffee box duct tape DIY project

One of my FB friends suggested covering the box with duct tape. Of course! And I just happened to have a roll of hot pink duct tape in a junk drawer–don’t all Fancy Girl moms? The result was a simple “hair thingy” catch-all, complete with a handle so my girls can carry it upstairs at the end of the day. So in honor of my 5-minute duct tape project, I found other–and more intricate–duct tape projects to try with your creative kids. Have fun!

If your calendar for the next week is anything like mine, you probably have at least one St. Patrick’s Day themed event going on. Whether it’s a parade or a school party, everyone is going Irish for the day..or the week. If you’re still looking for quick and easy crafts, check out 3 ideas from the always clever and creative FamilyFun Magazine. I especially love the “Over the Rainbow” heathy snack idea at the end.

This year for Christmas I had a vision to create a metallic ensemble for my girls that had some DIY element to it.  I usually know exactly what I want, but it becomes like a treasure hunt to find the perfect dress or skirt combination. I had my heart set on finding something in all silver (which in reality is not good for deflecting stains) or gold, but the perfect dress choice for my girls ended up being a ballerina pink drop-waist dress with gold star accents from The Gap. Since the dress was sleeveless it needed a sweater (aka stain deflector)–and more gold–to complement the stars in the dress. The sweater was easy (Target). Then I found THE BELT and knew THAT would be my DIY project. Follow the steps below on how I re-created a Juicy Couture gold sequin belt, $38 at Zappos.com (sold out), with only 3 materials: sequin, ribbon and a glue gun.

DIY: Juicy Couture-Inspired Sequin Belt

Materials:

  1. 1 yard (per child) of 1.5 in. gold stretch sequin trim
  2. 1 yard (per child) of 7/8 in. pink Offray satin ribbon
  3. Glue gun w/glue sticks

DIY: Gold Sequin Belt

Instructions:

  1. Measure the size of your FG’s waist and cut the sequin to the length;
  2. Cut the ribbon to the same length of the sequin and then cut in half;
  3. Fold over the top of one side of the sequin and add a few dabs of glue;
  4. Immediately place the end of your ribbon on the glue;
  5. Repeat steps on other side of sequin and you have your belt!

If you’re in search of adding some glam to your Halloween pumpkin decorating this year, you came to the right place. In our Fancy World, we use glitter, metallic paint, rhinestones, flowers, and more! Below are some DIY projects from Pinterest that will hopefully get your creative juices flowing.

For more projects and costume ideas, visit our Halloween Pinterest board.

Here’s a quick styling rule of thumb: If you want to create a bold and high contrast look, pick colors that are opposite (or diagonal from) each other on the color wheel. Case in point: Yellow and Blue. I took a simple yet bright yellow dress (a favorite of both daughters) and added some preppy contrast with a navy polka dot grosgrain ribbon. There’s no sewing required either if you tie it off in the back or even attach with velcro. Change it up with a pink or black. Have fun!

DIY: To add some flair to a simple dress, pick a color opposite the color wheel. Tie off the bow in the back or use velcro.

I can remember playing with my grandmother’s antique toy Singer sewing machine, one that clamped to the table and had to be turned by hand to make the needle move. I was probably 7 or 8 years old and I can remember attempting to make dresses for my Barbies even though the seam would pull apart as soon as I put it on the doll.

I was never great at sewing, but I always enjoyed it. I’d make scrunchies for friends (yes I grew up in the 90s), skirts without patterns, and most recently I’ve made a lot of square floor pillows as gifts for my friends’ kids. When it comes to making any kind of room decor, I always look for fun, girly fabrics with rich colors like magenta, periwinkle, coral and aqua. I even started a Pinterest board dedicated to Fancy Fabrics and Sis Boom is one of them!

Sis Boom is a line of vintage inspired fabrics and products by Jennifer Paganelli. Put simply, her vivid colors and whimsical girly patterns make me smile (see dancing girl in the photo above). I love her designs so much that I made her our featured Facebook cover photo for June (with her permission of course). Her products and fabrics are fancy and fun and are definitely a Fancy Girl Must…

Jennifer is also a published author with her first book, Happy Home, featuring 21 home decor projects. Her newest book of sewing patterns is called Girl’s World and includes 21 sewing projects for little girls. Perfect for A Fancy Girl! What I like about the book is that she offers a range of projects at varying difficulty levels. Even though I’m still at a novice sewing level, I’m not intimidated by her projects, and her fabrics make me want to try and make something for my Fancy Girls!

Each project comes with a pattern (neatly assembled in a folder at the front of the book-see above) and detailed instructions with easy to follow pictures. I appreciate the little details too like the way she calls the list of materials “From the Sewing Basket,” just like one my mother had (and I played with).

Accessories and Home Decor Projects in Girl's World

Girl’s World doesn’t just having clothing projects; Jennifer also includes room decor and accessories like a flower covered lamp and an overnight bag for your doll (shown above).

Giveaway Details

Jennifer captures the whimsy and creative imagination of little girls in the prints and colors of her fabrics. I loved her designs so much that I wanted to share the Girl’s World opportunity with someone else! One lucky winner will receive a copy of Jennifer’s book.
