Note: We received clothing from GapKids in exchange for a review. All opinions are authentic and my own.
Let me just start off by saying that I love GapKids. They have some of the best looks for kids and many that I would want for my own wardrobe. I’ve had many conversations with friends about just how much we would want GapKids clothing for ourselves. Gap has been a mainstay of in our house ever since I was pregnant with my eldest. Their clearance section also provides my mom with plenty of reason to shop for all 3 for practically pennies when you factor in coupons and the discounts for Gap card holders. I love getting those text messages from her after she made a stop in the store.
While we usually hit up Gap for back-to-school shopping, the girls had an opportunity to pick some of their favorite fall looks from GapKids in exchange for our review. The hard part was selecting just a few.
Because there are so many adorable and fun styles, it’s important to stick to a checklist of needs when shopping for back-to-school. I’ve written about shopping tips on many occasions (Spring tips here, back-to-school tips here) and have done a pretty good job sticking to my own rules. One thing that is so important to remember is that once your kids get to an age when they have strong opinions, you can’t buy what you want them to wear. Pick your battles and don’t make clothing one of them (unless of course it’s obscene or wildly inappropriate). There were plenty of tops, jeans and dresses that I would have picked out for the girls from GapKids, but when I showed them options, they ended up going for other things. You will save – more like not waste – a lot of money when you buy clothes your kids will wear.
Another important step is to take inventory of their closets to see what they NEED for the first few months of school. And when it comes to trends, it might be a good idea to let school start so your daughter can wait and see what is popular among her friends. Something that seems trendy now, might get overshadowed by something new that comes on the scene in late Sept/Oct. And we all know how influential girls are when it comes to fashion! (sigh) In addition to trends, you need to consider activewear for gym class and sports. My middle daughter plays soccer in the fall and she needs comfortable/breathable clothes. The addition of GapFit has allowed us to do more necessary shopping all in one place.
The 3rd key point to consider is to start the year off with purchases that have versatility – things that can be layered with what you already have, can be worn with skirts or pants, and that can go with different colors and prints.
When the clothes arrived, I think I was more excited than they were. One of my favorite pieces from our shipment is the “Ha Ha Ha” shirt in black sequins, but all of the clothes met with smiles and cheers from the girls. When we had a slight break in the sticky heat, we made a trip over to our preschool’s playground for our photo shoot. My youngest is still a student there and kept busy playing with her favorite toys. But the girls had fun climbing on the playground too.
