Book Review: Very Christmas by Simone Mets

Book Review: Very Christmas by Simone Mets

When I met author Simone Mets in person this month to learn more about her book, Very Christmas, one thing I told her was that even though the main characters are kids doing good deeds, I think it’s the adults who will gain the most from reading with their children. It’s us who sometimes need the reminder of the meaning of Christmas. We’re so busy with work, family and getting ready for the holiday, that it’s easy to take for granted all the blessings in our lives. Sometimes it takes a conversation with your children to reignite that spark of good will. Most of us know a Christmas story (or movie) that celebrates the joy of giving to others more than just the material gifts we wish to receive. Add to that the book Very Christmas which I received from Simone to share with the girls.

The book is stunning and is the perfect size for AT LEAST two kids to hold and read together. When I first opened it, I will admit to being a little surprised that there weren’t any pictures.  However, as I learned from Simone, each page was designed using bold colors and various festive fonts to encourage readers to visualize the story rather than predict it from pictures. There’s no rushing through the book to SEE what happens at the end; this is the perfect lounge-on-the-couch-together book that the whole family can enjoy. The girls and I cozied up on my eldest’s bed and then she and I took turns reading.  And even without illustrations, the girls still had their favorite pages.

Without giving too much away, the premise of the story is this: A little girl named Ava learns that Christmas is in danger. Local billionaire, Mr. Stump, reported that he and his team had been to North Pole after learning that Santa’s workshop had been destroyed. After Stump brainstormed with Santa ways to help, it became clear that Christmas could very well be canceled that year. Mr. Stump put a call out to the world to find someone UNSTOPPABLE who could help save Christmas. Would Ava be the one? Get the book to find out!
