Pantone recently announced the long-awaited Color of the Year for 2015. This moment is crucial to fashion, design, home decor, and any industry where color is pretty much the whole basis for existence. The color for 2015 was announced as Marsala–a light burgundy shade, that connotes a very earthy, bohemian vibe. Marsala “enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in the announcement.
Not surprisingly, it’s been met with mixed feelings. NYmag’s The Cut called it “icky” and PopSugar said it was “ugly,” likening the shade to “Aunt Sally’s lipstick.” Ouch. The Washington Post quoted a Virginia-area interior designer who said the choice “surprises” her since the industry was veering away from reds and burgundy for interior colors. But I’m The It Girl sees its potential as an awesome throwback to the It Girls of the 90’s: Brenda Walsh aka Shannen Doherty, Cindy Crawford, The Twin Peaks cast, Winona Ryder and Drew Barrymore.
When I first saw the choice, I wasn’t immediately wow’d by it, but it certainly gave off a warm, pleasant vibe. I can picture it in weddings and garden parties, but not as much as a color I would use throughout the year (I see it more as a Thanksgiving choice). I thought I would pull some picks together anyway to show how to make the color work for your Fancy Girl. If you’re looking for Marsala fashion inspiration, look for color descriptions like burgundy, plum, wine, dusty rose, and any kind of reddish pinks. On Friday, I’ll share picks for the grown-up Fancy Girl. You can expect lipstick, of course.
So what do you think of the choice for Color of the Year?
