It’s Day 4 of the Fancy Girl Holiday Gift Guide. The first 3 days covered ideas for the little trendsetter, the STEMgirl, and the little foodie on your list. Today is all about the little bookworm in your life.

I can’t tell you how proud I am of my eldest Fancy Girl and her love of reading and writing. She’s in 1st grade, where they encourage the kids to both read on their own and with groups. She brings home 2 small books everyday and has to keep a log of her reading. Some days she’ll bring home a book with lots of words  (and lots of pages!) when she wants a challenge. And then on top of her daily books, my husband reads to the girls before bed. The books range from Bible stories to Disney classics. And sometimes, she’ll share the reading with him. It’s amazing watching your child go through this transformation from finding sight words to reading entire books with hard words. And like a natural pairing, she really loves writing too. Whether it’s just copying words from stuff around the house or writing little stories in school and at home, she seems to find confidence through the skill. I hope she continues this interest so I can live vicariously through her. I was not a huge fan of reading when I was younger, and these days I wish I had more time to read for fun. However, as she starts to read young adult fiction and will have required reading for school, I think we’ll start family reading time to encourage the activity among everyone. It’ll be fun to see what authors and book series appeal to her as she gets older.
